All are welcome to join Archbishop Gregory M. Aymond and New Orleans faith leaders for an interfaith service in solidarity with our brothers and sisters of every tradition who are immigrants and refugees on Sunday, February 25 at 3 pm at the Archdiocese of New Orleans Hispanic Apostolate, 2505 Maine Ave., Metairie.
In his Message for the 104th World Day of Prayer for Migrants and Refugees, Pope Francis said “Every stranger who knocks at our door is an opportunity for an encounter with Jesus Christ, who identifies with the welcomed and rejected strangers of every age (Matthew 25:35-43). The Lord entrusts to the Church’s motherly love every person forced to leave their homeland in search of a better future.”
The prayer service will immediately precede a National Call-in day sponsored by the USCCB to encourage Catholics to contact members of Congress. In announcing the National Call-in Day, Cardinal Daniel DiNardo of Galveston-Houston, USCCB President; Archbishop José H. Gomez of Los Angeles, USCCB Vice President; and Bishop Joe S. Vásquez of Austin, Chairman of the USCCB Committee on Migration, together issued the following statement:
“We are also announcing a National Catholic Call-In Day to Protect Dreamers. This coming weekend, we will be asking the faithful across the nation to call their Members of Congress next Monday, February 26, to protect Dreamers from deportation, to provide them a path to citizenship, and to avoid any damage to existing protections for families and unaccompanied minors in the process.
“Our faith compels us to stand with the vulnerable, including our immigrant brothers and sisters. We have done so continually, but we must show our support and solidarity now in a special way. Now is the time for action.”
