The 8th annual MLK Day On, Not Off is January 16

 

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” said Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and on the day the nation honors his legacy and memory, over 350 local youth will come together for the 8th Annual MLK Day On, Not Off.  The special day of service on January 16 is meant to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by enabling young people and their families to make a difference for those most in need in the New Orleans area.

The volunteers, mostly New Orleans area Catholic High School students, will start the day with a prayer service and commissioning by New Orleans Archbishop Gregory Aymond at Jesuit High School in New Orleans. From there, teams of volunteers will go out to complete various community service activities to improve the lives of the less fortunate. The day concludes with a reflection on the activity and why it is important to heed the Gospel call to serve those in need.

                                                Hispanic Apostolate, 2505 Maine Street, Kenner

                                                Rescue Ranch, 1201 Main Street, Belle Chasse

                                                St. Margaret’s Daughters, 3525 Bienville St. New Orleans

                                                Salvation Army, 4526 S Claiborne Avenue, New Orleans

                                                Louisiana Children’s Museum, 420 Julia St., New Orleans

                                                Ozanam Inn, 843 Camp Street, New Orleans

                                                Chateau Living Center, 716 Village Road, Kenner

                                                Ronald McDonald House, 4403 Canal St., New Orleans

Day of Service Schedule:

Note: several locations will have work sites until 1 pm only followed by lunch and reflection

7:30 am - 8:00 am Assembly, Sign-in and Continental Breakfast

8:00 am - 8:50 am Prayer with Archbishop Gregory Aymond

8:50 am - 9:15 am Travel to Work Sites

9:15 am - 12:00 pm Volunteer Work

12:00 pm - 12:45 pm Lunch

12:45 pm - 3:00 pm Volunteer Work

3:00 pm - 3:15 pm Reflection and Closing Prayer at Work Site

3:15 pm Departure for Home

 

The annual MLK Day On, Not Off is a collaborative effort among the archdiocesan Offices of Black Catholic Ministries, Catholic Schools, CYO/Youth & Young Adults, Racial Harmony and Religious Education and Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans.
