Ten deans are appointed to serve at the leisure of the Diocesan Bishop after he consults with the priests of the deanery. Deans are appointed to a three-year term of office.
Deans exercise the functions described in canons 553-555 of the Code of Canon Law and other applicable laws of the Church. A dean may also receive other specific faculties as designated by the Diocesan Bishop. Deans assist the fraternal support of the clergy of the deanery, especially those in trouble or need. The dean is to foster gatherings of clergy for fellowship, formation, and organization and is to make regular telephone calls and emails to the priests of the deanery and to make visits to priests who are hospitalized or in ill health. He is to welcome new clergy into the deanery.
Deans assist pastors and parishes of the deanery by fostering good liturgical practice in accord with the law of the Church and diocesan regulations (e.g. assuring that vessels and vestments of church parishes are kept in good order). He is to assure that good administrative practices enable the communities of faith to practice good stewardship in all areas of parish life (e.g. convoking deanery meetings; assuring that Parish Pastoral Councils and Finance Councils are operating in accord with the law; promoting formation of clergy by encouraging participation in retreats and formation programs of the diocese, etc.). He is to assist the Bishop in coordinating the parish visitation described in canons 396-398 of the Code of Canon Law, substituting for him when necessary (e.g. assuring sacramental records are well kept).
