Following a series of consultations and an outpouring of community support, Our Lady of Perpetual Help pastor Fr. Kyle Dave announced today that Our Lady of Perpetual Help School in Belle Chasse will remain open for the 2021-2022 school year. Fr. Dave informed the parents via a letter cosigned by Superintendent of Catholic Schools Dr. RaeNell Houston, and school principal Annette Accomando informed the school faculty and staff today.
An announcement regarding the schools’ possible closure was made earlier in the spring following a significant drop in registration and a significant deficit. Following the announcement, however, the school and surrounding community rallied to develop a plan to advance the school and encourage enrollment. The plans, in conjunction with additional work on the part of school and archdiocesan leadership were enough to show the school’s viability for the upcoming school year.
In the letter from Fr. Dave and Dr. Houston to the school community they stated that in the coming year, parish and school leadership will work closely with the archdiocesan Department of Catholic Education and Faith Formation and archdiocesan Finance Office in order to recognize and address any issues quickly and determine ongoing viability and pledged to keep the community informed as they move forward.
In a written statement, the Archdiocese of New Orleans said, "It is never our desire to close a Catholic school adn we are encoruaged that through consultation and community support, Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Belle Chasse will remian open for the coming school year."
Fr. Dave and Dr. Houston praised the community support, encouraged it to continue, calling it “vital” to the ongoing efforts of the school, and encouraged school families to return and new families to register.
