This year, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, which is December 8 annually, falls on a Saturday. Unlike many Holy Days of Obligation in the United States, Immaculate Conception is not abrogated when it falls on a weekend because it is under this title that Mary is the Patroness of the United States. Therefore Catholics should make plans to attend Mass in honor of this important feast for our church in this country.
To fulfill this obligation as well as the obligation for the 2nd Sunday of Advent, Catholics may use the following as a guide:
Friday Night Vigil on December 7 and Saturday Evening Vigil on December 8
Friday Night Vigil on December 7 and any time on Sunday, December 9
Saturday Morning, December 8 and Saturday Evening Vigil on December 8
Saturday Morning, December 8 and any time Sunday, December 9
Saturday Evening, December 8 and any time Sunday, December 9
Two different Masses on Saturday night, December 8
The Immaculate Conception celebrates the dogma proclaimed in Christian Tradition and defined in 1854, that from the first moment of her conception, Mary--by the singular grace of God and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ--was preserved immune from original sin.
