Archbishop Aymond Issues Update to Coronavirus Guidelines

March 10, 2020In a memo today, New Orleans Archbishop Gregory Aymond updated the guidelines for parishes in regards to liturgical celebrations in light of the presumptive case of COVID-19 (Coronavirus). The following is the text of that communication:
"Since there is a presumptive case of COVID- l9 (Coronavirus) in the New Orleans area, we must act out of an abundance of caution. Therefore, effective immediately the chalice containing the Blood of Christ is not to be offered to the congregation.
Furthermore, I suggest that the sign of peace should be offered by making a simple bow to the other person and say, "peace be with you".
Thank you for your cooperation. Let us pray for those who are affected by the virus and for our protection.
Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us."
This communication is an update to a February 28 memo in which the archbishop granted pastors discretion in how to address coronavirus concerns. That memo also reminded the faithful who are sick to remain home and encouraged good hygiene amongst liturgical ministers.
In related coronavirus prevention news regarding the Catholic school faculty and staff members that are under voluntary self-quarantines after traveling abroad over the Mardi Gras holidays, none of those individuals have reported any symptoms of illness as of March 10. Those self-quarantines are effective until March 13.Church and school leaders are continuing to monitor the situation and are in contact with local health professionals for guidance as well as consulting with local healthcare professionals in regard to Coronavirus and infectious disease prevention. Medical experts and infectious disease professionals have emphasized that maintaining good hygiene and staying away from school or work when ill are critical to keeping our community as healthy as possible. As a result, we are reinforcing the following practices:

appropriately covering coughs and sneezes;

cleaning frequently touched surfaces; and

washing hands often.
